Drug Uses
Norvasc belongs to class of drugs called calcium channel blockers. Norvasc relaxes (widens) the blood vessels (veins and arteries), helping the heart to pump and reducing its workload. Norvasc also treats hypertension (high blood pressure) and angina (chest pain). Norvasc can be also used for purposes other than those mentioned in this medication guide.
How Taken
Norvasc is produced in tablets for oral use. The usual dose is once a day. To avoid any stomach problems, take Norvasc in combination with food or milk. Consult your doctor before using salt substitutes containing potassium. Your doctor may prescribe you a low-salt or low-sodium diet.
Warnings/Precautions
It is important before starting any treatment with Norvasc to inform your doctor in case you have liver disease or disease of the heart or blood vessels such as aortic stenosis, sick sinus syndrome, heart failure, coronary artery disease or low blood pressure. If you suffer from any of the listed symptoms, it may turn out that Norvasc is not appropriate for you or you may need a special dosage adjustment or special medical observation during treatment. Norvasc is in the FDA pregnancy category C. There is not any information if this drug can cause any harm to an unborn baby. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or if there is a chance to get pregnant during treatment. It is not known whether Norvasc gets into breast milk and whether it may have negative influences on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Missed Dose
In case you have forgotten a dose, take it as soon as you notice. If it is too close to the next one, ignore the missed one and resume your usual dose schedule
Possible Side Effects
If you observe any of the following side effects, discontinue taking Norvasc and contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical treatment:
-severe dizziness or fainting;
-unusually fast or slow heartbeat;
-swelling of the legs or ankles.
-an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; swelling of the tongue,lips, or face; or hives closing of the throat;
-chest pain;
-jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); or
-psychosis;
Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take Norvasc and talk to your doctor if you experience
-fatigue or tiredness;
-headache;
-vivid or abnormal dreams;
-increased or difficult urination.
-flushing;
-insomnia;
-abdominal pain;
- diarrhea,nausea, or constipation; or
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.
Storage
Keep the drug at average room temperature, 59° to 86°F (15° to 30°C) and dispense in tight, light-resistant containers.
Overdose
Over dosage can lead to excessive peripheral vasodilatation with marked hypotension and probably a reflex tachycardia. Other overdose symptoms include weakness, dizziness and chest pain, shortness of breath, unusually fast or slow heartbeat, , fainting, coma, slurred speech, and confusion.

Before starting treatment with Norvasc, inform your doctor if you have liver disease or another disease of the heart or blood vessels such as aortic stenosis, sick sinus syndrome, heart failure, low blood pressure, or coronary artery disease. Patients over 65 years of age are more prone to experience any side effects. In such cases, your doctor can prescribe you lower doses.
